BikeInsure is a U.S. bicycle and e-bike insurance provider offering specialized cycling equipment coverage for accidental damage, transit damage, and optional theft protection.

BikeInsure is a leading provider of bicycle and e-bike insurance in the United States. During enrollment, customers select one of three coverage types based on how the cycle is used — Bike Ride Insure (Casual), Bike Race Insure (Competitive), or Electric Bike Insure (E-Bike) — with limits up to $50,000. Coverage protects against accidental damage during riding and transit, with optional theft protection. Bike Race Insure (Competitive) also includes worldwide coverage when riding, racing, or traveling internationally.

What is bike insurance, and how does bicycle insurance work?

Bike insurance helps protect your bicycle or e-bike from financial loss if it is damaged in an accident or stolen.

Coverage applies to new or used bicycles, e-bikes, and listed accessories, whether ridden casually or competitively, on-road or off-road. BikeInsure policies allow you to select the appropriate coverage type and Amount of Insurance based on the value of your cycling equipment — the bike and listed accessories — up to $50,000.

Unlike homeowners or renters insurance, BikeInsure is a separate policy designed specifically for cycling equipment, so claims do not affect your other personal insurance policies.

Bike Insurance Coverage

Is bike insurance worth it?

Unlike homeowners insurance, a BikeInsure policy is designed specifically for cycling equipment — with a lower deductible, no impact on home insurance claims, and coverage for riding accidents, transit damage, and theft.

Bike insurance covers financial loss from accidental damage while riding or in transit and theft of cycling equipment — losses often limited, unusable, or excluded under homeowners or renters insurance, even with a scheduled personal property endorsement (scheduled insurance rider).

A separate bike insurance policy, like BikeInsure, provides peace of mind and financial protection for bicycles and e-bikes against riding accidents, transit damage, and theft.

Cyclists can ride confidently knowing their valuable cycling equipment is protected when BikeInsure coverage is in place.

One key benefit is that BikeInsure policies operate independently of homeowners' or renters' insurance. Claims are handled directly through BikeInsure and do not impact other personal insurance policies.

Insurance Rider Risk

Do I need bike insurance if my bicycle has a warranty?

Yes. A bicycle warranty and bike insurance protect against completely different risks.

A bicycle or e-bike warranty is a promise made by the manufacturer (or a similar party) regarding the product's quality. It addresses defects in materials or workmanship and outlines conditions for repair, replacement, or refund if the product does not function as intended.

Bicycle insurance is a separate opt-in policy designed to help cyclists manage the financial risk to their bike or e-bike, as well as listed non-stock accessories and components. It covers sudden and accidental direct physical loss to insured equipment caused by riding accidents or transit damage, and can also cover theft when theft protection is selected.

How Warranty and Bike Insurance Differ:

A warranty does not cover theft.

A warranty protects the product from factory defects. Bike insurance protects against financial loss from accidents, transit damage, and theft. Most cyclists rely on both the warranty and bike insurance because they cover entirely different situations.

This indicates BikeInsure is a regulated insurance product offered throughout the United States, backed by a nationally licensed insurer — not a warranty, membership plan, or protection program.

BikeInsure administers the insurance program as a licensed insurance producer in all 50 states and Washington, DC, and serves as the official bike insurance partner of organizations including USA Cycling, the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA), and USA Triathlon.

Is bike insurance available in all 50 U.S. states?

Yes. BikeInsure bike insurance — including coverage for e-bikes — is available in all 50 U.S. states and Washington, DC.

BikeInsure administers the insurance program nationwide as a licensed insurance producer, and the policy is underwritten by Great American Insurance Company, rated A+ (Superior) by AM Best. Riders can enroll online and receive the same coverage protections regardless of their state of residence.

What types of bikes does BikeInsure cover?

BikeInsure covers any new or used "bicycle," defined in the policy as any cycle powered by human pedaling or an e-bike.

Coverage is not limited by wheel count or design — two-wheeled, three-wheeled, and four-wheeled pedal cycles are eligible, including bicycles, e-bikes, trikes, tandems, recumbents, and para-adaptive cycles.

Some insurance policies define a "bicycle" as a two-wheel pedal cycle, excluding adaptive or multi-wheel cycles from coverage, but BikeInsure is designed to protect the full range of modern cycling equipment.

BikeInsure covers Class 1–3 pedal-assist electric bikes (up to 750 watts and 28 mph pedal assist).

Eligible Bike Types

Does bike insurance cover accessories?

Yes. BikeInsure covers non-stock-attached accessories and upgraded components that are listed at enrollment or added to the policy via a future policy endorsement request. These items are insured together with the bicycle or e-bike as part of your total Amount of Insurance.

Coverage applies to equipment attached to or fixed to the bicycle in addition to the manufacturer's original specifications. Common examples include groupsets, computers, pedals, cycling radar, power meters, saddles, wheelsets, extra batteries, water bottles, bottle cages, lights, seat bags, hydration packs, and installed or mounted pumps. A listed helmet is also covered.

When accessories are covered

Accessories are covered when they are damaged as part of a covered bicycle loss — such as a riding accident, transit incident, or when the bicycle is stolen, and theft coverage is selected.

Since coverage applies to the insured bicycle and its equipment together, coverage does not apply when only an accessory is taken or damaged by itself — for example, a light, computer, saddle, battery, or wheel removed from an otherwise undamaged bicycle or e-bike.

Items not attached to the bicycle — including clothing, shoes, glasses, phones, earbuds, or items stored inside bags — are not covered. Automobile bike racks and bike cases used in transit are also excluded.

Does bike insurance cover medical expenses from a cycling accident?

No. BikeInsure covers damage to the bicycle or e-bike — not rider injuries or medical expenses. Medical costs from a cycling accident are typically handled by health insurance, not bicycle equipment insurance.

For injury coverage, cyclists typically look to USA Cycling 365, an on-the-bike injury secondary medical insurance policy designed to help cover out-of-pocket medical expenses beyond the scope of their health insurance or a personal accident policy.

What does bike insurance not cover?

BikeInsure is designed to protect cycling equipment from sudden and accidental physical loss — but like all insurance policies, some situations are not covered.

BikeInsure covers the bicycle or e-bike and listed accessories — not people, medical bills, or liability.

Below is a plain-language summary of common exclusions. Always refer to the policy for the full terms and definitions.

Applies to everyday riding, commuting, fitness, training, and mass-participation charity rides that do not require a racing license. Coverage applies to individual and group rides, on-road or off-road, within the United States and Canada.

Bike Race Insure (Competitive)

Applies when the insured cycle is used in at least one competition annually, such as triathlons, gran fondos, gravel events, criterium races, or any cycling event requiring a racing license. Includes all Casual riding usage and features worldwide coverage when riding, racing, or traveling internationally.

Electric Bike Insure (E-Bike)

Applies to electric bicycles meeting Class 1–3 specifications (up to 750 watts and 28 mph pedal assist). Valid for casual, commuter, fitness, training, and mass-participation rides that do not require a racing license.

Bike Coverage Types

Does BikeInsure cover a bike used for Uber Eats, DoorDash, or food delivery?

No. BikeInsure offers bicycle insurance designed for personal-use bicycles and e-bikes — not commercial or gig-economy delivery use. Bikes used for Uber Eats, DoorDash, Grubhub, Instacart, courier work, or similar delivery services are considered commercial-use bicycles and are not eligible for a BikeInsure personal bicycle insurance policy.

BikeInsure bicycle insurance covers bikes and e-bikes owned by individuals for activities such as casual riding, commuting, training, organized events, and racing. Coverage applies when the insured or members of their household are using the bike.

Bikes assigned to others — including rentals, lease programs, loaner fleets, or commercial delivery operations — are also not eligible under a personal bicycle insurance policy. These operations may instead require BikeInsure Business Bike Fleet Insurance.

Competitive cycling, races, and organized cycling events are considered personal use — not commercial use.

Personal Use Only

Does BikeInsure offer Business Bike Fleet Insurance?

Yes. BikeInsure offers Business Bike Fleet Insurance for commercial bicycle operations — including rental programs, lease fleets, and loaner bikes assigned to employees, contractors, or authorized users. BikeInsure’s bicycle definition is not limited to two wheels — coverage applies to two-, three-, and four-wheel bicycles, as well as pedal-assist e-bike configurations.

BikeInsure Business Bike Fleet Insurance covers the bicycle equipment — protecting business-owned bikes and e-bikes against riding accidents, transit damage, theft, and, depending on the application and state eligibility, embezzlement. BikeInsure does not offer liability insurance.

Business Bike Fleet Insurance requires a minimum of $50,000 in bicycle equipment value to enroll. A single bicycle or e-bike used for food delivery does not meet this threshold and is not eligible.

For personal-use bicycles and e-bikes, BikeInsure offers individual bicycle insurance covering up to $50,000 per bike — designed for casual riding, commuting, training, events, and racing.

Does bike insurance cover commuting and daily riding?

Yes. BikeInsure covers bicycles and e-bikes used for commuting and everyday riding when enrolled under Bike Ride Insure (Casual) coverage for non-electric bicycles and Electric Bike Insure (E-Bike) protection for e-bikes.

These usage types include commuting, casual riding, fitness, training, and mass-participation charity rides that do not require a racing license. Coverage applies on roads and off-road within the United States and Canada.

If a covered accident occurs while riding or during transit, the policy pays the cost to restore the insured equipment — the bicycle or e-bike and listed accessories — to its pre-loss condition using new OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) or equivalent parts, including labor and applicable tax, based on a written estimate from a local bike shop of the policyholder's choice, up to the Item Amount of Insurance, less the $150 deductible.

Do I need a hard-sided case when traveling with my bike?

Yes. For travel by plane, train, bus, or boat, the bicycle or e-bike must be protected in a hard-sided case for accidental damage coverage to apply.

This requirement helps ensure the bicycle or e-bike is properly protected during transit.

A hard-sided case is not required for auto transit when the bicycle or e-bike is properly secured on a vehicle rack.

Coverage does not apply to:

• Misplacement or mysterious disappearance

• Loss of items stored inside accessories

• Theft while the bicycle or e-bike is in the care, custody, or control of a commercial carrier (including airlines, shipping companies, couriers, or freight services).

Hard Case Required

Can I use a soft-sided bike bag when traveling with my bike?

No. For travel by plane, train, bus, or boat, a soft-sided bike bag does not meet the hard-sided case requirement.

To be eligible for accidental damage coverage during this type of transit, the bicycle or e-bike must be protected in a hard-sided case.

Soft-sided bike bags may provide convenience for packing and transport, but they do not offer the level of protection required under the policy for common carrier travel.

A hard-sided case is not required for auto transit when the bicycle or e-bike is properly secured on a vehicle rack.

Yes. BikeInsure covers accidental damage to your bicycle or e-bike while it is mounted on a vehicle bike rack and properly secured during transit.

Transit coverage is included with every BikeInsure policy, allowing riders to transport cycling equipment with confidence — from local rides to destinations across the United States and Canada.

Does bike insurance cover international travel?

Yes. BikeInsure features worldwide coverage for riding, racing, or traveling internationally when enrolled under Bike Race Insure (Competitive).

If a covered accident occurs anywhere worldwide — including during normal riding, training, or a competitive cycling event — the policy pays the cost to restore the insured equipment — the enrolled bicycle and listed accessories — to its pre-loss condition using new OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) or equivalent parts, including labor and applicable tax, based on a written estimate from a local bike shop of the policyholder's choice, up to the Item Amount of Insurance, less the $150 deductible.

Bike Ride Insure (Casual) and Electric Bike Insure (E-Bike) apply within the United States and Canada. Riders traveling internationally should enroll under Bike Race Insure (Competitive) to ensure worldwide coverage.

Does bike insurance cover theft at home and away from home?

Yes. When optional Bike Theft Insurance is selected, the policy protects the insured bicycle or e-bike against theft, whether it occurs at your residence or away from home, provided the bicycle or e-bike is secured when unattended.

BikeInsure offers flexibility not commonly available with other insurance programs. Customers may choose accidental damage coverage only or add theft protection to extend coverage to stolen equipment.

When theft coverage is included, and a covered bicycle or e-bike is stolen, the policy pays the replacement-cost value for equipment of a substantially similar kind and quality (including listed accessories), less the $150 deductible, and not exceeding the Item Amount of Insurance shown on the Declarations page.

Secure Theft Coverage

Is my bike covered if stolen from a garage?

Yes. When optional Bike Theft Insurance is selected, BikeInsure covers theft of the insured bicycle or e-bike from a private garage, residence, apartment bike room, or other storage location, provided the bicycle is secured while unattended. Tip: "Lock it, then leave it."

Coverage applies whether the garage is attached or detached and protects the enrolled bicycle and listed accessories when the bicycle is stolen.

BikeInsure does not require bicycles or e-bikes to be locked to an immovable object or secured with a specific pre-approved lock. The requirement is that the bike is secured when unattended, which can be accomplished by locking it.

If a covered theft occurs, the policy pays the replacement-cost value for equipment of substantially similar kind and quality, which may be based on a newer equivalent model, including listed accessories, up to the Item Amount of Insurance shown on the Declarations page, less the $150 deductible.

Garage Theft Coverage

Does bike insurance cover theft from a car or bike rack?

Yes. When optional Bike Theft Insurance is selected, BikeInsure covers theft of the insured bicycle or e-bike while it is secured to a vehicle bike rack, including hitch and roof racks, or stored in a vehicle when secured while unattended.

Coverage applies whether the vehicle is parked at home or away from home, provided reasonable theft-prevention measures are used, and the bicycle or e-bike is locked or otherwise secured while unattended.

If a covered theft occurs, the policy pays the replacement-cost value for equipment of substantially similar kind and quality, without deduction for depreciation, which may be based on a newer equivalent model, including listed accessories, up to the Item Amount of Insurance shown on the Declarations page, less the $150 deductible.

Do I have to lock my bike to an immovable object for bike theft coverage

No. BikeInsure does not require a bicycle or e-bike to be locked to an immovable object.

Different bike insurance policies define theft protection in very different ways. Some policies require the bicycle or e-bike to be locked to an immovable object, while others require both an immovable object and a specific pre-approved lock. For example, Velosurance, Markel, and Sundays require the bicycle to be locked to an immovable object. BikeInsure does not.

BikeInsure uses broader coverage that applies when reasonable theft-prevention measures are used — meaning the bicycle or e-bike is secured with a locking device while unattended. A specific brand or model of lock is not required.

When optional Bike Theft Insurance is selected, and a properly secured bicycle or e-bike is stolen, the policy pays the replacement-cost value for equipment of substantially similar kind and quality (including listed accessories), less the $150 deductible and not exceeding the Item Amount of Insurance shown on the Declarations page.
