Security Footage from Reported Specialized Bike Theft in Texas
In this customer Q&A, a BikeInsure policyholder explains what happened after their 2025 Specialized mountain bike was stolen from a Texas restaurant parking lot while secured to a vehicle bike rack. The theft was reported to local law enforcement and classified as felony theft due to the total value of the bike and its listed accessories. Fortunately, the rider had a BikeInsure bicycle insurance policy with theft coverage in place for the stolen bike. The claim was approved, and $7,023 was paid within 10 days — without impacting the rider's homeowners insurance.

What bike was stolen, and where did the theft occur?
I owned a 2025 custom-built Specialized Epic 8 EVO Pro that I valued at $6,000 when I purchased my policy, including 16 aftermarket accessories and components. I mention that because it reflects how detailed my BikeInsure policy enrollment was.
I flew out to Texas to meet my friend and race partner so that we could enjoy a few days of Texas weather and enjoy some local riding before we started the long drive out to Tucson, AZ, for this year’s 24 Hours in the Old Pueblo, which has become something of a tradition for us. They call it the "Burning Man of bike events," as nearly 4,000 cyclists gather at Willow Springs Ranch to ride a 17-mile loop course as many times as they can over 24 hours.
The night before we were leaving to start the long drive from Texas to Tucson, we stopped for dinner. Despite parking our van in the restaurant’s well-lit parking lot, in the spot closest to the restaurant and directly under two visible security cameras, my bike was stolen from the bike rack it was on just a few minutes after we were seated.
This is the best and only photo I have of the complete bike from an earlier build.

Was your bike locked, and what type of lock were you using?
Yes — absolutely. We always secure our bikes with a cable lock when we're not riding. The stolen Specialized was locked to the rear-mounted bike rack on the Eurovan Camper. It's hard to believe we were dining just 30 feet away when my bike was taken.
Did you file a police report after your bike was stolen?
Yes. I immediately contacted the police and filed a report. I also obtained the restaurant's security camera footage documenting the theft as it occurred, which was provided to law enforcement.
Due to the bike's value, the police classified the theft as a felony.

Was there security or restaurant video of the theft?
Yes. Thankfully, the restaurant had a quality security camera system. They were very helpful and provided the specific footage shortly after the incident so we could share it with both the police and BikeInsure.
How did you first hear about BikeInsure?
I first learned about BikeInsure through my IMBA membership. The International Mountain Bicycling Association partners with BikeInsure as its official bike insurance provider, and in hindsight, that turned out to be the most valuable benefit of my membership. Because I enrolled in coverage, I wasn't facing over $6,000 out-of-pocket loss after my bike was stolen.
For years, I carried bike insurance through Velosurance. When I learned that BikeInsure was IMBA's official bike insurance partner, I decided to compare the policies side by side. I carefully read and analyzed the insurance policy language — it matters.
Beyond being more affordable than Velosurance, BikeInsure's policy language was clearer and stronger. One of my biggest concerns with bike theft insurance is the requirement for a lock. Imagine having your bike stolen only to have a claim denied because the lock did not meet a narrowly defined "immovable object" requirement in the policy. That possibility always concerned me.
With BikeInsure, I felt confident I understood the coverage terms. When my bike was stolen, the claims process confirmed that confidence — it was straightforward and handled professionally.

When did you enroll in BikeInsure coverage?
I enrolled two bikes with BikeInsure in April 2025. I paid a few hundred dollars in premiums, and when my bike was stolen, I recovered $7,023 through my bike insurance claim because I had selected the optional theft coverage.
How did the BikeInsure theft claims process work
Immediately after the theft on February 8, 2026, I gathered the video evidence and contacted local police to file a report. I then called BikeInsure to understand the claim process. I was directed to the Customer Portal, where I filed the theft claim in just a few minutes. I entered the date and location of the theft, provided the police report number, and uploaded the security video footage directly into the system.
I received a call from the claims administrator almost immediately while we were back on the road, driving through New Mexico. The claims administrator explained how to properly value the loss and told me exactly what she would need. Based on further conversation, I felt confident enough with the process that I began searching for a comparable replacement bike, which I later found only 20 miles from the race venue.

How long did it take for your bike theft claim to be approved?
Very quickly. I received an approval email just 10 days after submitting my claim.
Interestingly, I had a loss payee listed on my policy at enrollment from when I purchased the frame. The longest part of the process was waiting for confirmation that this loss payee had been paid in full. Once that letter was submitted, I received approval within a day, on February 19.
Did you feel you were fairly compensated for your stolen bike?
Absolutely. After my small deductible, I received a check for $7,023.14 covering the replacement of my Specialized mountain bike and the listed accessories on my policy.
Was your homeowners or renters insurance an option?
No. One of the biggest advantages of BikeInsure is that my claim does not impact my homeowners insurance policy. I received payment for my loss without risking higher premiums or a claim on my home policy. That's why I carry separate bike insurance.
Is BikeInsure worth it?
100%.
